TensorFlow | Word embeddings with ELMo

ELMo is a pre-trained model provided by google for creating word embeddings. It can be used directly from TensorFlow hub.

ELMo doesn't work with TF2.0, for running the code in this post make sure you are using TF 1.15.0

  • Intsall TensorFlow and TensorFlow hub
  •
    pip install tensorflow==1.15.0
    pip install tensorflow_hub

  • Import modules and load pre trained ELMo model
  •
    import tensorflow_hub as hub
    import tensorflow as tf
    print(tf.version.VERSION)

    # Load ELMo model from TensorFlow hun
    elmo = hub.Module("https://tfhub.dev/google/elmo/2", trainable=True)

  • Provide input the the ELMo layer and create embeddings
  •
    # Provide input tensor and create embeddings
    input_tensor = ["This tutorial is on elmo embeddings from tensorflow hub ",
            "TensorFlow hub provides many reusable pre trained models in several domains"]

    embeddings_tensor = elmo(input_tensor,
        signature="default",
        as_dict=True)["elmo"]

  • Initiate a TensorFlow Graph object for processing the "embeddings_tensor" generated in previous step
  •
    with tf.Session() as sess:
        sess.run(tf.global_variables_initializer())
        embeddings = sess.run(embeddings_tensor)
        print(embeddings.shape)
        print(embeddings)

    Output tensor has shape [batch_size, max_length, 1024], in this example we have list of 2 inputs, max_length of sentence is 11 , hence shape of the the output tensor is (2, 11, 1024).
